Strategies to Deliver Actionable and Specific Feedback
Hello Readers,
One of my key takeaways from OSE is that effective feedback should be specific, actionable, and focused on growth. Even well-intentioned feedback can be misunderstood if delivered poorly.
Here are three simple strategies to make feedback more impactful:
1. Use the Situation-Behavior-Impact (SBI) Framework
Focus on facts, not assumptions. Describe:
- The situation (when and where it happened)
- The behavior (what you observed)
- The impact (the effect on others or outcomes)
This approach keeps feedback objective and constructive.
2. Adopt a Partnership Mindset
Feedback works best as a two-way conversation. Instead of giving instructions, ask questions that encourage reflection and self-awareness, such as:
- What strengths do you bring to the team?
- What have you learned from this experience?
Building trust leads to lasting improvement.
3. Follow the 80:20 Rule
Aim for a healthy balance of feedback: roughly 80% positive and 20% constructive. Recognizing what people do well motivates them to continue performing at their best while remaining open to improvement.
Note: For serious issues involving safety, ethics, or compliance, direct and immediate feedback is essential.
Final Thought
Great feedback isn't about criticism. It's about helping people grow, improve, and succeed. When delivered thoughtfully, feedback becomes one of the most powerful tools for personal and professional development.
